About ARISE
Asian Americans & Racism:
Individual and Structural Experiences
ARISE is a research project aimed at studying the effects of various risk and resilience factors on cognitive performance and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) biomarkers within the Chinese American, Korean American, and Vietnamese American populations aged 65 years old and older.

Why ARISE?
Asian Americans are the most rapidly growing group of older Americans at risk for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD). In California, Asian Americans had the greatest increase (746%) in Alzheimer's Disease-related deaths in 2000-2018. Yet, there has been insufficient involvement of Asian Americans in existing ADRD research.1
To address this, ARISE is:
- Building the first known cohort of older Asian Americans with high levels of limited English proficiency to study the impact of risk and resilience factors on cognitive performance and ADRD
- Creating a large AD biomarkers dataset on Asian Americans with newer and larger amounts of AD biomarkers
- Evaluating protective and risk factors that modify the effects of multi-level discrimination on cognitive performance and levels of AD biomarkers among ARISE participants
Funded by NIH/NIA #R56AG079510-01A1
